Controlling search engine indexing

2 min read
FastStore provides the experimental noRobots, noindex, and nofollow flags to control how search engines interact with your storefront.
These flags are experimental and may have limitations. Test them before using them in a production environment. Incorrect settings can prevent storefront pages from appearing in search results.

Before you begin

Review the available flags

Make sure to review the available flags and choose the ones that fit your use case:
FlagTypeBehavior when set to true
noRobotsbooleanPrevents FastStore from adding its default robots meta tag to pages. Use this option when you want to manage crawler instructions through another implementation.
noindexbooleanInstructs search engines not to index storefront pages or include them in search results.
nofollowbooleanInstructs search engines not to follow links on storefront pages or pass ranking signals to the linked pages.

Update the FastStore version

Make sure your FastStore project is on the latest version; if not, run the following to update it:

_10
yarn upgrade -L --scope @faststore

Configuring the flags

  1. Open the discovery.config.js file in your FastStore project.
  2. Add the flags you need to the experimental object. For example:
    discovery.config.js

    _10
    experimental: {
    _10
    noRobots: false,
    _10
    noindex: true,
    _10
    nofollow: true,
    _10
    },

  3. Run the project locally:

    _10
    yarn dev

  4. Open the local storefront and inspect the page's <head> element or use an SEO testing tool to confirm that the expected crawler directives are present.
Before deploying, confirm that noindex and nofollow have the intended values. Enabling them can affect the storefront's visibility and link discovery in search engines.
